Cala d’Or was born in the 1930s, when the Ibiza-born artist Josep Costa Ferrer planned a small seaside colony here inspired by Ibizan architecture. You can still see it today: low, white houses with simple shapes, set among pine trees and coves of turquoise water. It belongs to the municipality of Santanyí and is one of the best-known places in south-east Mallorca.
Life revolves around the coves – Cala Gran, Cala Esmeralda, Cala d’Or, Cala Llonga, Cala Egos and, a little further north, Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena – and the marina in Cala Llonga, with more than 500 berths. Next to it stands Es Fortí, an 18th-century fort built to watch over the coast.
Cala d’Or offers apartments in complexes with a communal pool, Ibiza-style townhouses and detached villas, some close to the sea or the marina. It is a popular choice for a second home: lively in summer and much quieter in winter.
If you plan to let the property to holidaymakers, check before you buy whether it has a tourist rental licence and on what terms. We go through this with you for every property.
Cala d’Or has more restaurants, shops and buzz during the season. Portocolom, our village, keeps its fishing-village character and a local life that carries on all year round. They are close to each other, and many buyers look at both before deciding. We’ll help you compare them honestly, without pushing you either way. There’s more in our guide to the towns of south-east Mallorca.
We are a family-run estate agency based in Portocolom and know the south-east first-hand. We work in English, German and Spanish, show you the properties and stay with you right up to signing at the notary. If you’re looking for something specific that isn’t in the list, tell us and we’ll let you know as soon as something suitable comes in.
If you’re thinking of selling, we’ll prepare a valuation for you: online, using the cadastral reference, or with a visit.
